Migrant Smuggling Suspects into the UK, Applies For UK Asylum
Jamal Owda is fighting against extradition to Greece after a report warns of deep-rooted problems of violence in Greek prisons.
A Palestinian accused of smuggling thousands of Syrian migrants into Europe has applied for asylum in the UK.
Jamal Owda was arrested in Liverpool in December as part of raids across Europe – including in Greece, Austria and Sweden – in which 23 suspects were held.
Authorities maintain the criminal operation, which may have netted up to £7m, was co-ordinated in Greece, and officials want the 26-year-old to be extradited so he can stand trial in Athens.
Seems to me for a case for the European Arrest Warrant, If this guy was a British citizen his feet would not touch the ground.
At a hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Owda’s lawyer argued that conditions in Greek prisons are such that his right to life would be threatened under the European Convention on Human Rights if he was sent back. Just a reminder Greece is a EU country. Where the problem?
Amelia Nice said a report by Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) has identified a pattern of human rights violations incompatible with Article 2 of the convention.
The 2015 study highlights what CPT declares to be a “widespread and deep-rooted problem of police ill treatment”, violence and intimidation in Greek prisons.
Ms Nice also warned that should Owda be deported to Greece there is a further risk he could be sent back to Palestinian territories, which could threaten his life. May be he should have thought about that before he entered into criminal actives.
The British lawyer is trying to arrange for an independent expert to visit a Greek prison before a full hearing in the case.
The court also heard Owda suffers from unspecified mental health problems.
He was remanded in custody until the hearing on 10th May.
